Chateau de Rey:

Cathy Sisquelle's story

Chateau de Rey has been in the family 5 generations, but the Chateau itself was sold off to pay debts. Luckily, the land with its unique terroir remain in the family and each parcel is worked by a family member.

Cathy produces a wonderful 100% Black Grenache 'Chouchou' or 'darling/honeybunch' as we would say! It is a magnificant surprise of sweet jammy prune and fig, not overpowering, just right. As we walk along the vines, Cathy will tell us about the 'Gallets Roulees' or Rolling Stones (no, not Jagger and Co.) she and Phillippe produce, how and why it has won prizes all over the South of France.

She's smart and funny. We never hurry.

When we go into the Cave to taste, we laugh and compare, but seldom spit!

We will each taste something different in the wines, we may even disagree on what's great and not so great. If I taste strawberry, you might get blackcurrant ... why not?

I'll bring along with me my box of aromas, 56 natural aromas - from orange to leather - to help us identify those scents which escape naming.

'Love hearts?'

'No, no....you know the ones......'

'Dolly mixtures?'

'Yes, yes....exactly'

I want you to remember each vineyard and each wine. Hugh Johnston, the Time's wineophile for many, many years, says each wine should tell you the story of its life. Were the grapes grown in a particularly hot year? Was there much wind from the sea? Was the soil stony, and so did it hold the daytime heat well into the evening? Was it carefully harvested not to crush the grapes too early? Can you taste the love and attention ....... you should.
